Octopus Energy has rolled out its social housing tariff Tenant Power to 1,500 homes, thanks to a partnership with Together Housing Group.

According to Octopus, the tariff cuts energy bills for tenants of Together Housing Group’s housing by up to £200 a year compared to a standard variable tariff.

The Tenant Power tariff is specifically designed for social housing and is claimed to be the UK’s first tariff to allow both social housing tenants and landlords to benefit from smart green technology. Landlords get paid for any excess energy sold to the grid, from the solar and battery packages, incentivising them to invest in clean tech upgrades for their properties.

Octopus said:

This win-win removes one of the main barriers to green investment in social housing by giving landlords a clear incentive, while tenants see real savings on their bills.”

The first phase of the partnership starts with existing properties managed by Together Housing Group and is expected to expand further, including to new builds, the company added. The Group manages or owns 37,000 properties in the north-east of England.

The investment in these homes is part funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority to help scale up the rollout of renewable power and help tackle fuel poverty.

Patrick Berry, Executive Director of Property at Together Housing Group, said:

We are committed to improving the lives of our residents and strengthening the communities we serve. For some time, we have been working to find a way to deliver cheaper power to our residents, reduce our carbon impact and help us pay for the solar investment. By working with Octopus and the Tenant Power tariff, we can deliver these benefits at a large scale across our communities.”
