Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has confirmed the Government is in talks to create a replacement for the Green Homes Grant, which was scrapped earlier this year.
Appearing on Radio 4’s Today programme yesterday, Kwarteng said he was discussing a possible replacement scheme with Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
He said: ““I’m very keen that something equivalent to it is brought back to encourage owner-occupiers to take the steps to decarbonise their houses, and that is something that I am talking to the Chancellor about.”
The Green Homes Grant launched in 2020 and was closed less than a year later.
Responding to Kwarteng’s comments, the Federation of Master Builders’ Brian Berry told the i newspaper: “To bring back a replica of the Green Homes Grant scheme will result in the same problems.
“What we need is a different, wider-ranged approach with a long-term focus. We’ve got 29 million homes in the UK. Most of them will require some form of improvement. In that sense it is a major infrastructure project and it should be treated as such,.”
